Quick answer: Pest control in Vero Beach works best when someone looks before they spray. Warm weather, summer storms, sandy soil and homes close to the Indian River Lagoon give termites, roaches, rats and ants a year round season. Vero Beach Pest Control connects you with a local technician who inspects your home, names the pest and the reason it showed up, and explains the plan and price before any work starts.

I have spent more than twenty years in attics, crawl spaces and lanais up and down this coast. Spring brings termite swarmers to the porch light. Summer rain brings mosquitoes, ants and yellow patches in the St. Augustinegrass. The first cool snap in winter sends roof rats looking for a warm attic.

Why Vero Beach Homes See So Many Pests

Vero Beach sits on Florida's east coast, split by the Indian River Lagoon. The barrier island, ZIP 32963, runs between the lagoon and the Atlantic. The mainland stretches west past I 95 toward the citrus groves and ranch land. Three bridges tie the two sides together: the Wabasso Bridge on CR 510, the Merrill Barber Bridge on SR 60 and the 17th Street Bridge. The pest mix changes a bit from the beach to the groves.

The National Weather Service office in Melbourne covers our county, and its records show what anyone who lives here already knows: long, hot, humid summers, frequent afternoon storms, and mild winters with only short cold spells. You can check the long term averages in the NOAA climate normals. Insects slow down a little in winter, but they rarely stop.

  • Water on every side: the lagoon, canals, golf course ponds and retention ponds hold moisture in the air and soil. That suits mosquitoes, termites and roaches.
  • Older homes near downtown: older houses near Pocahontas Park and the historic blocks downtown have aged wood framing and trim, the kind of wood West Indian drywood termites like.
  • Palms and fruit trees: palm crowns and citrus, mango and avocado trees give roof rats food and a highway to the roof.
  • Sandy soil and St. Augustinegrass: lawns across the county are prime ground for chinch bugs, sod webworms, fire ants and the armadillos that dig for grubs.
  • Seasonal homes: snowbird homes and rentals that sit closed for months let pests settle in without anyone noticing. Travel also brings bed bugs and German cockroaches in luggage and boxes.

The Pests We See Most in Indian River County

Drywood and Formosan termites

UF/IFAS calls the West Indian drywood termite the main drywood pest in south Florida. It leaves small, six sided pellets below window and door frames. The Formosan subterranean termite comes up from the soil and builds large colonies. See termite control.

Palmetto bugs and German roaches

Big palmetto bugs live in mulch and palms and wander in. Small German cockroaches breed indoors, and UF/IFAS notes each egg case holds 30 to 40 eggs. See roach control.

Roof rats

Slim, agile climbers that run along palm fronds, fences and power lines into attics. Trapping and sealing the roofline works better than bait alone. See rodent control.

Ants

White footed ants trail in huge numbers but do not sting, says UF/IFAS. Fire ants sting hard. Carpenter ants point to wet wood. Baits beat sprays for most of them. See ant control.

Mosquitoes

The Indian River Mosquito Control District handles the big picture. Plant saucers, bromeliads and clogged gutters raise the mosquitoes in your own yard. See mosquito control.

Chinch bugs

UF/IFAS says southern chinch bug damage starts in sunny, water stressed spots along lawn edges. Good mowing and watering prevent much of it. See lawn pest control.

Bed bugs and wildlife round out the list. Each has its own page with signs to look for and what your technician will do. Start with bed bug treatment or wildlife removal for raccoons, green iguanas and armadillos.

Our Process

Our Process: From First Call to Follow Up

  1. 1. Tell us the pest

Send the short form with your address and what you are seeing. A photo helps.

  2. 2. Inspection

A local technician checks inside and out, from the attic and garage to the roofline and yard.

  3. 3. Plan and price

You hear what the pest is, how it will be treated and what it costs. Nothing starts until you agree.

  4. 4. Treat and seal

Treatment goes where the pest lives, and gaps that let pests in get pointed out or sealed.

  5. 5. Follow up

Your technician checks results and treats again if the pest is still active.

Before & After

Before and After: Pulling Mulch Back From the Wall

Mulch piled up against stucco keeps the wall damp and hides termite mud tubes. Pulling it back a few inches is one of the simplest fixes in Vero Beach yards.

Termites

Termites: The Pest That Costs Vero Beach Owners the Most

If I could get every homeowner in town to learn one thing, it would be how to spot termite pellets. Drywood termites live inside the wood with no need for soil. UF/IFAS explains that they push their droppings out through tiny kick out holes, usually 1 to 2 mm wide. The pellets pile up on sills, counters and floors, and they look like grains of sand or ground pepper. Most people sweep them up and move on.

Subterranean termites, including the Formosan termite, work from the ground up. They build mud tubes along foundations and fill hollow walls with carton, a mix of soil and chewed wood. UF/IFAS reports Formosan swarms in Florida run from early April to late June, right after sunset, with a peak in May. If you see clouds of winged insects at the porch light on a warm May evening, save a few in a bag for your technician.

Season by season

A Year of Pests in Vero Beach

Pests here follow the weather and the tourist calendar. Knowing what is coming helps you get ahead of it.

  • Spring: termite swarms, ants on the move, the first big wave of mosquitoes and chinch bugs starting on dry lawn edges.
  • Summer: afternoon storms, mosquitoes, fire ant mounds after rain, palmetto bugs pushed inside by heavy downpours, and sod webworms in the lawn.
  • Fall: storm season wraps up. Debris piles and wet wood left by storms draw termites and rodents. A good time to check the roofline and seal gaps.
  • Winter: roof rats in attics, German roaches and bed bugs indoors, and visitors filling rentals. Seasonal homes reopen, often with surprises waiting.

Mosquitoes deserve a word of their own. The Indian River Mosquito Control District was created by the Florida Legislature in 1925 and covers the eastern two thirds of the county. The district manages the lagoon marshes and runs a program certified by FDACS. Your part is the yard. The EPA advises removing standing water and using a registered repellent. Tip out plant saucers each week, flush bromeliads with a hose and keep gutters clear.

Do it yourself

Simple Things You Can Do Today

A technician can do a lot, but some of the best pest control happens in your own yard and kitchen. These steps follow the EPA's integrated pest management approach: take away food, water and shelter first.

  • Pull mulch back: keep it a few inches below the top of the foundation and off the stucco.
  • Fix drips: leaky hose bibs and AC condensate lines keep soil wet for termites and give roaches a drink.
  • Trim palms and limbs: keep fronds and branches off the roof so rats and ants cannot cross.
  • Pick up fruit: fallen citrus and mangos feed rats and draw wildlife.
  • Mow St. Augustinegrass high: UF/IFAS suggests 3 to 4 inches to help lawns resist chinch bugs.
  • Skip the bug bomb: foggers miss pests hidden in cracks and can scatter them.

Hiring

What to Ask Before You Hire an Exterminator in Vero Beach

  1. Is your business licensed by FDACS? Florida licenses pest control through the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services. Ask for the number and look it up.
  2. What pest is it, and how do you know? A good technician shows you the pellets, tubes, droppings or live insects.
  3. What product will you use, and where? Ask for the product name. Every product must carry an EPA registered label, and the label is the law.
  4. When can kids and pets go back in? Get a clear answer before treatment starts.
  5. Can I get the plan in writing? Ask for the plan, the product and the price on paper. If something goes wrong, the FDACS consumer page explains how to file a complaint.
  6. What happens if they come back? Ask before you pay, and get the answer in writing.

FAQ

Pest Control Questions From Vero Beach Homeowners

How much does pest control cost in Vero Beach?

Price depends on the pest, the size of the home, how far the problem has spread and whether you want one visit or regular service. Termite fumigation and bed bug work take more time and product than a general visit. Your technician inspects first and gives you the price before any work starts.

How do I check that a pest control company in Florida is licensed?

Florida requires pest control businesses to hold a license from the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (FDACS). Ask for the business license number and look it up through FDACS. The FDACS consumer page has a search tool for licensed companies and a way to file a complaint.

When do termites swarm in Vero Beach?

Spring is the busy season. UF/IFAS reports that Formosan subterranean termites in Florida usually swarm from early April to late June, just after sunset, with a peak in May. West Indian drywood termites fly mostly from April to June, though flights can happen any time of year.

What is a palmetto bug?

It is a nickname for several large cockroaches. UF/IFAS lists the American, Australian, brown and smokybrown cockroaches, which are 1 and 1/4 to 2 inches long, as the roaches Floridians call palmetto bugs.

Is pest control safe for kids and pets?

Products must be registered with the EPA and applied the way the label says. Ask your technician what product they plan to use and when kids and pets can go back into treated areas. The EPA guide to integrated pest management explains how to keep pesticide use low around the home.

Can I get same day pest control?

Same day service is an option. Send the inspection form early in the day and check the same day box. Whether a technician can come that day depends on the route, so the earlier you ask the better.

Does the county handle mosquitoes for me?

The Indian River Mosquito Control District, created in 1925, runs large scale mosquito control in the eastern two thirds of Indian River County. It cannot empty the plant saucers and clogged gutters on your property, which is where most backyard mosquitoes start. A yard program covers that part.

Are green iguanas a pest here?

They can be. UF/IFAS notes iguanas are not native to Florida, eat landscape plants and fruit, and dig burrows that can undermine sidewalks and seawalls. Their droppings can carry salmonella. A technician can explain trapping and exclusion options.

What areas do you take requests from?

Requests are welcome from all six Vero Beach ZIP codes (32960, 32962, 32963, 32966, 32967 and 32968), plus Indian River Shores, Orchid, Gifford, Florida Ridge, Vero Beach South, Winter Beach, Wabasso, Sebastian and Fellsmere. Send the inspection form with your address to check.
