How pests change from the beach to the groves

What We See Across the County

Each part of the county has its own pest pattern. On the barrier island in 32963, including Indian River Shores and Orchid, homes sit close to dunes, seawalls and the lagoon. Ask about iguanas, roof rats in palms and ghost ants in kitchens there.

On the mainland, 32960 covers the older core near City Hall and Pocahontas Park. Older wood framing and trim in these blocks is where we look first for drywood termites. South of downtown in 32962, many homes have St. Augustinegrass lawns that draw chinch bugs in hot, dry spells.

North in 32967, Gifford, Winter Beach, Vero Lake Estates and Grand Harbor mix newer homes with wooded lots and canals. Lots near water and woods tend to see more mosquitoes, raccoons and armadillos. West in 32966 and southwest around Oslo Road in 32968, homes back up to groves, pasture and retention ponds, so fire ants and rodents come up often.

Farther north, Sebastian, Roseland, Wabasso and Fellsmere are also in Indian River County. Send your address and we will tell you if a technician covers your street.

Indian River County runs from the Atlantic beaches west across the lagoon and mainland to farmland and the Blue Cypress Lake area. Indian River County government and the City of Vero Beach share the area with smaller towns like Indian River Shores, Orchid, Sebastian and Fellsmere.

Beachside homes deal with salt air, seawalls and green iguanas. Lagoon front homes see more mosquitoes from the marsh edges, which the Indian River Mosquito Control District works to manage. Older homes in the city see more drywood termites. West county homes on larger lots see more fire ants, armadillos and chinch bugs. Whatever your area, the plan starts the same way: an inspection, a clear plan and price, and treatment that fits the pest. Read how a visit works.
